Long Live Panormus... and Saint Rosalia, 28th Edition

Various Sites, from May 3, 2024 to June 6, 2024

On the fourth centenary of the discovery of Saint Rosalia’s remains, "Panormus. The School Adopts the City" — an event targeting students from local schools for the past thirty years — will be dedicated to the patron saint of Palermo and her story.

"Long Live Panormus and... Saint Rosalia" is, in fact, the title of the 28th edition of the project, which this year will involve children and young people from seventy-nine educational institutions of all levels and types, including public, private, and equivalent.

Churches, alleys, museums, and even shrines, paintings, and votive niches: through the classic “adoptions,” Panormus will enable the rediscovery of all those places in the city, more or less known, connected to the sacred and profane worship of the Little Saint.

During three weekends in May, students will guide visitors through sites and monuments to discover new stories and perspectives, and share the knowledge they have gained through studies, research, and school workshops.

However, there will also be recreational activities aimed at younger children thanks to the participation of numerous preschools (age group 3-6 years).

On Thursday, June 6, the Teatro Massimo, always a significant partner of Panormus, will organize the final day of the event.

The pupils from the music-oriented institutes involved in the project will play and sing on the steps of Piazza Verdi. On this occasion, the schools will return the keys of the city to the Mayor.

DOWNLOAD THE PROGRAM

Panormus is a project entirely organized by the Office of Compulsory Education and the Fight Against School Dropout of the Municipality of Palermo. This year, its implementation involved collaboration with the Curia and dioceses, the Regional Superintendence of Cultural Heritage of Sicily, the Teatro Massimo Foundation, the Municipal Department of Culture, GAM, Civita, the Municipal Police, the Municipal Office of Mobility and Traffic, Reset, Rap, the Municipal Office of Villas and Gardens, the Police Headquarters, and the Prefecture.

An interinstitutional agreement with the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage allowed, during the adoption days, to open to the public free of charge the Monumental Complex of San Giovanni degli Eremiti, the Cloisters of the Salinas Museum, and the Central Library.
