GEMME SUL FILO BY ROSA MANDINA
Jewelry
THE COMPANY
From the study and personal experimentation of Sicilian traditional textile craftsmanship, I began producing my first lace jewelry in 2017, after dedicating 30 years to the restoration of cultural heritage and the study of ancient technology.
The art of weaving thread, pearls, and precious stones has been documented since the year 1100. Historians at the court of Roger II described the Nobiles Officinae of the Royal Palace as an extraordinary workshop where "the colored silk thread, dyed in skeins of various colors, is used in the many forms of weaving... Gold is woven with silk, and the variety of multiform pictures is highlighted by shining gems; pearls are gathered in gold caskets, or pierced and connected with slender thread..."
Inspired by these writings, Gemme sul Filo was born with the aim of enhancing an ancient art typically associated with women, which today finds new uses in the fields of fashion and jewelry.
Reconnecting threads of forgotten identity and traditions, with my "Gemme sul Filo" I offer a contemporary narrative of Sicilian culture. My handmade jewelry tells a story and is the result of an alchemy between tradition and innovation, art and craftsmanship, experience and experimentation.
GEMME SUL FILO FOR THE FESTINO: "ON THE THREAD OF THE SACRED: DEDICATED TO ROSALIA" PROJECT
The line of jewelry that Gemme sul Filo has dedicated to Santa Rosalia is part of a broader project on which I have been working for some time with the painter Giulia Crimaldi. This project is dedicated to "Women" and their role in the history of Sicily; a line of jewelry that aims to spotlight and narrate the stories of women who were confined to their institutional roles as consorts and mothers but played an important part in Sicilian history.
Our narrative begins with Rosalia!
A woman who boldly challenged social conventions, embracing individuality and authenticity, distinguished by her ability to break the norms of traditional standards, choosing to pursue her personal values and ideals rather than conforming to a singular vision of the world.
Rosalia belongs to the cadre of women who made history with their stubborn sense of freedom, still representing a beacon of courage and determination for all women today.
The "On the Thread of the Sacred" line consists of:
- 2 hand-painted medallions with the image of "Santuzza": Unique pieces created by the artist Giulia Crimaldi, mounted on embroidered tatting lace, they are wearable or collectible works of art. The choice of semi-precious stones used for the two cameos has strong symbolic significance: Coral and ruby-colored Jade, which since the Middle Ages have represented the blood of Christ, His Passion, and Resurrection, and pearls, the ultimate symbol of purity and chastity.
- Two necklaces with crucifixes and earrings complete the line.
